ABOUT WE-DESIGNS.ORG

ORIGINS

Conceived in 2003, and officially launched as a collective in 2008, WE-DESIGNS.ORG is an international multi-disciplinary creative group. As a developmental and collaborative team of creatives (architectural + design) individuals, all our designs are established within the international standard, detailed orientated, quality within multiple design functions, but not limited to: material research, alternative fabrication methods, sound design, interactive installation, architectural, urban planning, and research-based design schemes.

The WE-DESIGNS.ORG "Team" members are composed of an international base of ingénue designers from distinctive backgrounds + multifaceted design fields, which hence produce a differentiated approach to the integral design processes within a project.

ORGANISATION

WE-DESIGNS.ORG takes its design theories + experimental approach collectively as a design collaborative from all its diverse members. All decisions are considered from the members within the "pool" of designers + points of views from within the Team before a project is finalised.

WE-DESIGNS.ORG is originally founded by Wendy W Fok. Young enough to be original and experienced enough to be competent, Fok began her design career in a few fashion houses in New York, which then led to collaborations at MAKE Architects (London), Eichinger Offices (Vienna), and COOP-HIMMELB(L)AU (Vienna) under the auspices of Wolf D Prix. Fok is educated with a Master of Architecture at Princeton University’s School of Architecture, an Urban Policy/Planning Certification at the Woodrow Wilson School, a touch from the Bartlett, and a Bachelor of Arts (Architecture - Economics) at Barnard College, Columbia University.

Fok has a Master of Architecture and Certification of Urban Policy/Planning from Princeton University, and a Bachelor of Arts in Architecture with a Concentration in Economics (Statistics) from Barnard College, Columbia University.

Notably, WE-DESIGNS.ORG, LLC has been selected by Twenty+Change(co-curated by Heather Dubbeldam and Lola Sheppard) as 1 of 20 Emerging Canadian Design Practices (2011), while recently Fok has been shortlisted as 1 of 13 DX (Design Exchange) Emerging Talent Awards (2013) across Canada.

Along with her practice, Fok is also a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor, enforcing and leading the Digital Media and Design Program at the Gerald D Hines College of Architecture, University of Houston, and a Doctor of Design doctoral student at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design. In parallel with her doctoral research, Fok is involved as a Teaching Fellow for the CopyrightX course at the Harvard Law School, and fellow in the DPSI - Digital Problem Solving Initiative (DPSI) Pilot at the Harvard Law School’s Berkman Center for Internet and Society. Her doctoral research is an investigative approach between computational innovation and ethical application of technical methods within digital fabrication and commodisation, for architecture and design. Fok has also been invited to tutor at several Architectural Association (AA) Visiting Schools, among other prestigious design workshops internationally.

Fok has an international background from Vienna, New York, London, Paris, Tokyo, Beijing, Hong Kong, and Canada. Her art installations have been displayed in Singapore, Paris, London, Dubai, Vancouver, Toronto, Hong Kong, Shanghai, New York, Athens, Venice, and Prague. She has worked on several international architectural projects, exhibitions, and competitions — including the Beijing Design Biennial (2013), the Asia Society Hong Kong Center “Imminent Domain” Exhibition Chief Curated by Dir. Fumio Nanjo, Director of the Mori Art Museum (2013), an Exhibition and Residency at Cité internationale des arts Paris funded by the Académie D’Architecture in Paris (2013), the London Design Festival TENT (2012), Toronto International Design Festival (2012), HKSZ Bi-City Biennale (2011/12), 12th & 13th La Biennale di Venezia (2010/12), the Shanghai Expo (2010), Athens Fringe Festival (2009), and Lower East Side Tenement Museum (2004/05).

Fok’s interests are toward the investigations of contextual and content-related natures of digital-media and design-fabrication, partnered with cradle-to-cradle material explorations that compliment scaled prototypes within architectural design. Meanwhile, her design methodology is to challenge the dynamic significance in structuring and mapping the ideals of art, architecture, and urbanism within the processes of [design | optimisation | fabrication] for resilient planning, interactive design, material research, and alternative methods of fabrication/production with progressive aims within the built environment.

On her spare time, Fok is the founder and administrator of (C)ODE-(C)OLLECTIVE (a collective forum for Grasshopper, Rhino, Parametric Modeling, and other digital media / design tools, which pose as an educational and developing archive site to formulate the critical utility of digital design), an Associate Member of the HKPDA (Hong Kong Parametric Design Association), Special Editions Editor of IJAC (International Journal of Architectural Computing), and Contributing / Overseas Editor for the a+a magazine (published by the Architectural Society of China).

JAMES LEALAND: London, UK / Shanghai, China
(Media Design Partner: Photographer/DJ/Media Designer)

James Lealand is the Media Design Partner and Media Design Project Manager of WE-DESIGNS.ORG. Along with being an active Professional Photographer and DJ, his portfolio contains over 30,000 images that have been made in 8 countries spanning 3 continents have all gone towards the various pictures shared in the last 12 months. Currently based in both London, UK and Shanghai, China, his works covers everything from events, reportage, portrait, product and wedding photography as well as honing his skills with fashion photography retouching and always exploring new techniques and building up the experience and equipment necessary to bring out the best in the things he is fortunate enough to see.

Lealand has recently been published recently in the Labour Briefing magazine and DJ Magazine in Amsterdam with further publications on the horizon. His recent work with Kingpin Marketing and the Stay Up Forever music collective has provided new fresh challenges and with all of this in mind he thought it was time to make some updates.

New to the site are the Fashion Retouching, London and Portraits galleries as well as updates to the Landscapes and Graffiti galleries. Fashion retouching shows examples of some of the skills that have been learnt to create the magazine look that we see from those 'perfect' models in magazines, pay close attention to the before and after images in that one. The London gallery is about showing some of the things he really loves about his home city especially now the summer is with us. This city truly comes alive from large public protests to relaxing in the park, just taking in the sights of this architecturally rich city is a pleasure. In the Portrait gallery you will see a mixture of both personal and professional work, with images of friends and clients that James has been commissioned to work with. He has found portrait work to be the most challenging aspect of photography and one he intends to pursue much further.
